Hommage au Superbike AMA 1988 : GSX-R750 Custom

Around 1985, when oil-cooled machines first appeared in Japan, there was a boom in racer replicas, and the Suzuki GSX-R750 was at the core of this boom. The owner of this vehicle, Mr. Hashimoto, is one such person, and he says that when the '88 GSX-R750 (J-type) was introduced, it was a big shock to him.
As you can see, the stock styling, including the stock Suzuki racing colors, was utilized while souped up the necessary parts. The Cyclone exhaust, rearset, etc, are all selected from Yoshimura products which is royal road-going style, and the specifications, such as the white 17-inch wheels (here, the rear wheels have been replaced with GSX-R1100 wheels) are AMA style as they are. The front forks were modified with new inner springs, the rear with an Ohlins unit for the GSX-R750RK, and the carburetors were changed to TMR-MJN with direct ignition to strengthen and modernize the ignition. The cooling system is also equipped with a self-made line. A sub oil cooler converted from the water-cooled GSX-R1100 was also added to the cooling system.
Bodyworks
Based on the '88 GSX-R750 (J), the only short-stroke model in the series, the exterior and frame are stock, including the single seat cover. The stickers that are not present on each part of the machine have been made by the owner, but even when viewed up close, the finish is clean and unmarked.
Electrical
The instrument panel is made of carbon and has the same layout as the stock one, with Yoshimura's digital multimeter added in the upper left corner for a centralized layout. Clip-on handlebars were made by Battle Factory. The high throttle and switches were changed accordingly.
Engine
The engine is an '88 model Φ77 x 43.7mm (Φ70 x 48.7mm for other years), and an oil catch tank was added inside the left rear of the cowl. The sub oil cooler is a water-cooled GSX-R1100 model, and the owner rebuilt this line several times to complete it. The ignition system is also converted to direct ignition.
The TMR-MJN φ36mm carburetor was used as opposed to the stock BST36. The funnel cover is installed in the same way as the '88 DAYTONA, which is also desirable.
Chassis
According to the owner, Mr. Hashimoto, the chassis was stock for this J-type with Φ43mm forks and 17-inch front and rear, so there was no difficulty in tire selection. Nevertheless, the front forks were built with WP springs, and the front and rear brake discs were souped-up with Sunstar brake discs.
The rear shocks are Ohlins for the '89 GSX-R750RK, similar in dimension to the J-type R750. The drive chain was also changed to RK's 520X XW.
The front and the rear wheels were originally 3.50/4.50 wide, and the rear wheel was converted to the modern standard 3.50/5.50 width by replacing them with 5.50 width for the GSX-R1100 (L~). Tires are Michelin POWER CUP in 120/70ZR17 and 180/55ZR17 sizes. The exhaust system and rearsets are Yoshimura product. The torque rods have also been shortened.
